Morning Coffee Pt. 2
Collecting Cars’ 2022 Season Opener.
I often get asked what the deal is between car enthusiasts and early morning meets. I mean, I get why they ask because sometimes I ask the same thing. But as someone who would sacrifice any amount of sleep to show up to some of these events, I’m always quickly reminded why cars & coffee are indeed the best partners on a lovely Sunday morning.
For those who have followed us since the launch of this platform, you would have probably read about our first coverage of Collecting Cars in October. At the time, they had just launched in Canada from the UK as an auction platform that brings out some of the city’s finest cars. There’s no better way for me to spend my Sunday mornings and to be honest, if they did this every weekend, you can expect to see me there every morning.
As the name “Collecting Cars” suggests, the lot was filled with some of Toronto’s finest collectibles and perhaps even some of the world’s best.
The spectacular Mercedes 300SL rolled in and took everyone’s attention. I mean, how can a 70 year old car be this gorgeous and breathtaking in a world where tech has taken over? Coming out of the post-war era with perhaps one of the most important cars in the Mercedes history with such an iconic design and a well engineered platform has definitely put this car as one of the most desirable collectibles in the world.
If you’ve been following my articles for awhile then you might have picked up on what my favorite brand might be. In case you haven’t, then let me just go out of my way to announce it for the first time to set the record straight… Yes, it’s Porsche.
I got there around 7:30 and this bright Orange RS was a great way to greet my eyes good morning.
When I first explored supercar wallpapers as a kid, one that really caught my eye was the 997 GT3RS. I wasn’t even a fan of Porsches at the time, but something about the RS cars on the road made it look so much more desirable for me.
We all know the new RS models have taken away the 6 speed option to get everyone on board the PDK transmission they’ve mastered — and people have no problem accepting it. The PDK is just that good. Regardless of your choice, the last RS model to allow you to opt for the 6 speed will go down as one of the most special cars in Porsche’s line up.
The event ran from 8:00am - 12:00pm and cars were rolling in and out all morning. A few good surprises, good coffee, and enthusiasts with minds alike created an atmosphere fit for a perfect Sunday morning.
With a special GT3 color, it only makes sense to have a matching duffle bag with the plaid pattern to remind you and the people around you that classic designs will remain and stay.
The infamous Pikachu GT2RS beloved by Toronto’s car community made an appearance together with his rare Jaguar Project 8. To complement the line up, he had also brought out his BMW M4 and Nissan Skyline that just got new wheels about a week ago. Widely known as “@yyzcurator” on Instagram, I’m always excited to see what new license plate is gonna be added to complement his collection next.
One recently completed builds in the community is Andrew’s (@nasty_m2_comp_) BMW M2 Competition. After 16 months in the process, the craftsmanship and thoughtfulness of the build shows, and Steven is immensely happy that he’s finally enjoying his vision come to life.
To add to an already bright morning, a Volcano Yellow P1 stopped the show and had everyone following him the moment he rolled in. Cameras clicking left and right, with young kids turning their necks like they had just seen a superhero for the first time. It’s hard to believe that this car is close to a decade old, and in my opinion, this is still what I consider to be the modern embodiment of what a McLaren is.
With 2 997s on the lot, this Aqua Blue GT3RS gave a nice contrast to the bright orange one sitting on the same row.
With rare collectibles endlessly going in and out of the lot, you can just easily become overwhelmed with all the history and stories of each car that sits. For now, enjoy this photo dump and let me take you around the lot.
With events like these, the cars are what brings us together, and the people are what makes it great.
As the event was coming close to an end, there were a few good surprises to help close it down and call it a day.
Until the next one. We hope to see you guys at the June event!
Our full video recap of the event is now up on our YouTube channel. Be sure to check that out if you’ve enjoyed this photo coverage.
